A Baptismal class is required for all first-time parents. Baptisms usually takes place during Mass but in discussion with the officiant, other times can be arranged. Godparents need to be at least 16 years old and at least one of the sponsors must be a practicing Catholic. To baptize one who does not reside in the parish, a letter from their pastor is needed to confirm 1) their membership status, 2) that the parents have fulfilled their parish’s requirements for baptism preparation and 3) that he [the pastor] gives permission for the baptism to take place here.
